2 Ideas for Apple Hand Pies
With apple harvesting in full swing, we are trying to take full advantage of all the delicious apple recipes. These two deliciously easy recipes have all the flavors of fall. Salted Caramel Apple Hand Pies
Ingredients:
- 10 Pillsbury Frozen Pie Dough Rounds (#1800)
- 2 Tbsp C & H Granulated Sugar (#1632)
- 1 1/2 tsp Regal Coarse Sea Salt (#1147)
Filling:
- 1 cup C & H Granulated Sugar (#1632)
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup Heavy Cream
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 tsp Regal Coarse Sea Salt (#1147)
- 8 cups fresh diced apples
- 1/4 cup Turkey Brand Flour (#2285)
- 1/4 tsp AP Signature Cinnamon Blend (#1678)
Instructions:
- First, thaw pie dough until flexible, covered, at room temp. 15-30 minutes or refrigerate overnight.
- In a small bowl, combine sugar and sea salt. Set aside.
- For the filling, add sugar and water into a saucepan and bring to a bowl. Cook until it begins to caramelize.
- Then, slowly whisk the heavy cream into the mixture while keeping it at a boil. Next, add butter and sea salt, and bring back to a boil. Simmer on low until the mixture reduces to half.
- Now, add the apples, flour, and cinnamon and bring back to a boil. Continue to simmer until it becomes thick like honey. Let the filling cool to room temperature.
- Once the filling is cooled, place the sticky side of the dough down and fill with about 4-6 tablespoons of the filling.
- Brush the edges of the dough with water and fold in half, then press down the edges with a fork. Using a knife, slice 3 small holes in the top of the dough.
- Next, place the pies on a parchment (#1153) lined cookie sheet (#4020). Sprinkle the top with 1/8 tsp sugar/sea salt mixture, then place in the oven at 375F for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is flaky and golden brown. Serve warm. It is delicious with a scoop of ice cream on top.

Oven-Fried Apple Hand Pies
Ingredients:
Filling:
- 3 cups fresh peeled, thinly sliced apples
- 1/2 cup C & H Brown Sugar (#1150)
- 2 tsp lemon juice
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 Tbsp Turkey Brand Flour (#2285)
- 2 Tbsp softened Kirkland Sweet Cream Butter (#1723)
- 1 tsp Mexican Vanilla (#6919)
- 1/2 tsp Kosher salt
Instructions:
- First, thaw pie dough until flexible, covered, at room temp. 15-30 minutes or refrigerate overnight.
- For the filling, place the apples, brown sugar, water, and lemon juice into a large saucepan over medium heat, until it begins to bubble.
- Cover, reduce the heat to low and let cook for 6-8 minutes or until the apples are tender, stirring occasionally.
- Next, add the flour, sugar, butter, vanilla, and salt to the mixture and cook until the starts to thicken.
- Remove from the heat and allow to cool for at least 15 minutes.
- To assemble, place the sticky side of the dough down and fill with 1/4 cup of the apple filling.
- Then, brush the edges of the dough with melted butter, fold it in half, and use a fork to seal the edges.
- Next, place the pies on a parchment (#1153) lined cookie sheet (#4020) and sprinkle with the Cinnamon Vanilla Sugar.
- Place in the oven for 14-19 minutes at 375F, or until golden brown.
